Azumi OE x Anne Ishii

Meeting for the first time, the distorted realities (metaphysical/kinetic) of Azumi OE  will be infused with the focused but ethereal improvsiation of Anne Ishii.

For the past few years, Anne Ishii has been involved in Philadelphia arts scene in all manner of settings whether performing solo on drum kit and electronics or in trio with Totally Automatic. She is one of the most dynamic voices around, notable in both her wide-range expression and her ability to drill down into core-concepts, expanding, manipulating, and refracting them into different forms. Her unique sensibility will be an intriguing complement to the extreme and emotionally contorted form of Butoh performed by Azumi OE.

Azumi OE

The raw value of live performance is what fuels Butoh dancer azumi O E. Mesmerizing, shocking and playful movement is choreographed with meticulous timing, conspiring a visual relationship between the inner and outer human dimensions. Azumi wields her physical form as an expression and exploration of full individuality routed by the notion of collective oneness. Following eight years with New York-based company Vangeline Theatre and as Assistant Choreographer/Principal Dancer for Butoh Master Katsura Kan, azumi O E makes a continuous effort to exceed artistic constructs. She regularly develops experimental projects through solo pieces and collaborations with artists of various mediums. Notable co-operative works span video art and live performance with contemporary visual artist MARCK; composer Takuya Nakamura, “Impulsive Instrument” with Bassist Sean Ali, and upcoming duo with bassist Tim Dahl. She had an artist residency at the John Hopkins PEABODY Institute in 2023/24 and was a 2024 NYFA/NYSCA Artist Fellow in Choreography.  www.azumioe.com
