About the event

The world’s wisdom traditions teach, and psychology confirms, that our everyday state of mind is only one limited form that our consciousness can take. Along with other “techniques of ecstasy” such as meditation, ritual, and the use of psychedelics, music has always been one of the foremost means human beings have employed for the expansion of their minds. In this talk, presented in anticipation of the People’s Music Supply’s May 19 concert “Breath and Specter: Anthony Braxton’s Ghost Trance Music,” Thomas Patteson will share some of the insights from his ongoing research project on the relationship between music and metanoia. What can the study of consciousness tell us about music, and vice versa?
