Haxan (1922) may be one of the most strange and shocking films ever made. What is it exactly? A silent documentary about witchcraft? An “essay film” about satanic panic? A pastiche of vignettes about the persecution of women? A psychedelic fever dream about sexual repression? None of these descriptions seem to do it justice. It is best to just watch it with an open mind and let the flood of images wash over you.
